Apple Pie in Julian
A visit to Julian isn’t complete without eating apple pie! You will have plenty of choices of restaurants and bakeries to choose from – that’s for sure.
A few years ago, we did a taste test (that was fun!) and concluded that our favorite traditional pie was from Mom’s Pies. The crust is flaky, the apples are plentiful, and it’s the perfect amount of sweetness.
As you can see, it didn't take our family long to polish off one apple pie. It was delicious!
It's a better deal to buy one pie and split it among your family than to buy it per slice. That is, if your family can agree on what kind of apple pie to get!

Recently, we discovered another pie that’s worth talking about. It’s the Caramel Pecan Apple from the Apple Alley Bakery. Wow, this thing is incredible!
I would actually be tempted to drive out to Julian just to walk around and get a slice of this amazing dessert. Someone in our family is allergic to nuts; otherwise I think I would have bought two pies to go. It’s that good!
We found this pie because the line at Mom’s Pies was out the door. We crossed the street and headed for Apple Alley Bakery which was very quiet. Sometimes that means the food’s not good, but that wasn’t the case at all. We asked the friendly woman working the counter what her favorite pie was and she wholeheartedly suggested the Caramel Pecan Apple. She was absolutely right – that pie was to die for.
Tucked in an alley across from Mom's Pies, Apple Alley is a quaint place to have some peace and quiet if Main Street is buzzing.
If you love apples, you’ll enjoy visiting Julian during Apple Days. Apple Days celebrates the fall harvest and runs from mid September to mid November. There are special festivals that include pie eating contests, storytelling, gold panning and craft shows. Be warned that the weekends are pretty crowded so be ready to wait in line to eat at a restaurant. If you’re local, you may want to pack a picnic and then just pick up an apple pie from a bakery window and bypass the long lines for food. Apple Picking
Visiting an orchard and picking your own apples is a great activity for kids. We stopped by and picked apples at this orchard. You pick the apples yourself, weigh your apples and then leave your money in a box. The apples were 75 cents a pound. They were super tart but again, they were a lot of fun to pick! We just picked a few but the experience was worth it for the kids.
