When you visit the zoo, you'll see signs for the Balboa Park train. If your kids love trains like mine do, this miniature train is worth the detour!
The Balboa Park Miniature Railroad takes a 3 minute, half-mile trip through four acres of Balboa Park. It's much more exciting than the typical $2 train ride at your local mall that just goes in a circle with little or no ambiance.
Hey, you can see for yourself in this video taken from the train...
Well, as you can see from the video, the ride is long...which is great when you're riding! You'll really get your money's worth in this scenic and very well-done ride for younger kids.
There are even stuffed giraffes, tigers and other animals to ride along with you on the train. Here's my daughter on her first ride. She may not look too thrilled but she didn't want to get off!
Even the friendly train conductor stopped to pose for a picture with us. The railroad is operated by the San Diego Zoo Dept of Transportation.
The train is a model G16, now a rare antique with as few as fifty in operation today.
Admission is $2 per ride.
Kids under 1 year old ride free.
Kids under 5 years old must ride with an adult.
