It's a bus! It's a boat! It must be the San Diego SEAL tour! This fun trip via land and sea is a totally unique experience. You’ll begin at Seaport Village and board the boat which will act as a bus for the first part of the tour. Get ready for a pleasant but windy ride, so bring a light jacket, although fleece blankets are offered on the tour.
Then you’ll launch into the San Diego Bay and transform into a boat. Your kids will love the variety. Here’s a video to show you what you might expect on the San Diego SEAL tour!
We really enjoyed our tour guide who was very knowledgeable about San Diego. Of course, he told lots of corny jokes as tour guide should! On the tour, you’ll learn things like:
What’s the number one industry in San Diego?
What’s the difference between a seal and a sea lion?
What common fish played an important role in San Diego’s history?
How do dolphins help the Navy in wartime?
I boarded the San Diego SEAL tour on a Saturday morning with my 2 kids (ages 4 and 2) and my parents. Although my daughter looks seasick, she really did have a great time! My son liked it when the SEAL was a boat, and my daughter preferred when the SEAL was a bus.
It’s a lot of fun when another SEAL boat passes you in the water because you really get a good look at this fun, eye-catching vehicle. It’s a “hydra-terra” amphibious vehicle that’s Coast Guard approved ensuring a very safe experience.
Points of interest on land include the Embarcadero, San Diego International Airport, Star of India, USS Midway, plus all the history you’ll hear behind the buildings. In the Big Bay, you’ll pass Navy ships, sailboats (we even saw racing sailboats out that day), fishing vessels, sea lions and many varieties of birds.
Tickets are $32 for adults and $16 for children (ages 4-12). Kids 3 and under are free. And if you’re a San Diego resident, ask about the resident special where “friends ride free” and you can get one free ticket for a paid ticket. For more information, call 619-298-8687 or visit the

The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and returns back to Seaport Village. My 4 and 2 year old loved it – the variety of traveling on the street and the bay helped to keep my 2 year olds attention. At the end, they received SEAL sailor caps, so you’ll have some fun photo ops with the San Diego SEAL tour vehicle. We give the SEAL tour a thumbs up for the family, whether you’re on vacation or staycation!
