Travel with Baby
5 Tips for a Less Stressful Trip
We have family on the East Coast, so we've experienced travel with baby coast to coast usually about two times a year. Travel with baby is not for the faint hearted, especially air travel which is both tiring and unpredictable. We've had lots of canceled connecting flights through the years at Christmastime as you can imagine! And screaming babies at 30,000 feet!
A few tips when you travel with baby via airplane:
1. If you have a connecting flight, plan on getting stranded. If you got stuck for a day with only the luggage you're carrying, would you make it? Do you have a coat for the baby, change of clothes, enough diapers and formula?
2. It's okay to bring formula and milk for babies. To have extra water on the plane, we bring empty plastic water bottles through security and then refill them at the drinking fountains at the gate. That way, you always have water and you're not at the mercy at the flight attendent to help you if they are busy.
3. Pack lots of snacks and meals for yourself and baby. Food at the airport and on the airplane is totally overpriced.
4. What will occupy your baby? Bring it! Whether it's a laptop and DVDs, favorite small toys, deck of picture cards, soft cover books, bring things to engage your baby during the flight. Sometimes, favorites ended up being clear plastic ziploc bags with items inside like lip balm, lotion, sunglasses, etc.
5. Bring ID for your baby, like an immunization record. Usually, they don't ask, but I have had a few airlines ask for my baby's ID.
Perhaps most importantly, bring a sense of humor and an extra dose of patience. When you travel, especially with babies, something is bound to go wrong. A piece of luggage will get lost, your baby will soil his clothes, he won't be able to sleep well on the plane, etc etc! You can't help what happens, but you do have control over your attitude.
If your flight is delayed, smile and start looking for a quiet corner to wait. No matter how you stress or fuss about it, your flight is still leaving at the same time. Anticipate being inconvenienced and that will help the travel day go a little better.
