San Diego Zoo Safari Park Journey into Africa

Journey into Africa tram

This is the must-do attraction at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly the Wild Animal Park). All aboard to Simba Station for a 30 minute tour of Africa’s desert, forest and mountain habitats. You'll be spotting exotic animals the entire way!

wild animal park, rhinos You and your kids will be looking for African natives like rhinos, giraffes, cape buffalo and zebras. Depending on your tour, you may come very close to some animals, like this time when the rhinos were right by our tram.

I just said tram, but what exactly do you ride on? Your kids probably want to know. The Park calls it a “open-sided, soft-wheeled tour vehicle.” Depending on the age of your children, you can call it train, shuttle, tram, or anything in-between. Bottom line: it’s a fun, breezy ride!

Guided tour rides depart 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. daily. During the extended summer hours, the last tour departs at 8:15 p.m. Once it’s dark, there’s not much to see anyway.

If you’ve ever been to the Wild Animal Park in the past, you’ll notice the former Wgasa Bush Line Railway has been replaced by this new Journey into Africa tour. It’s a vast improvement as the new tour brings you much closer to the animals.

The tour is included in the general admission ticket.

Watch video taken from the Journey into Africa tram...you'll see part of a live birth, hear the history of the Wild Animal Park, and then travel back to Lion Camp.

I advise getting on the Tour as early in the day as possible. You’ll avoid longer lines as the day goes on, and standing in the heat as you wait in line. Also a note for any guests with disabilities. If you have a service animal or it’s physically difficult to wait in line, you can advance to the front of the line.

Oh, and keep in mind there's no bathroom on the Journey into Africa. It's a 30 minute ride so plan accordingly.

Here's a picture of our daughter's first ride. She loved it!
